Recycling
Herington, Regional Airport
Owner: Pavers, Inc.
Salina, Kansas

RMCI, operating as subcontractor to Pavers, Inc. of Salina, Kansas, processed 40,000 tons of concrete runways for reuse as base course (sub base) for new runways at Herington Regional Airport in Herington, Kansas. The original runways at Herington were constructed in the 1940’s for use by the U.S. military. When constructed, the runways were 150 ft. wide to accommodate landing military aircraft. New runways being constructed at Herington will be constructed with concrete 75’ wide to accommodate small private aircraft.

The existing runways were removed and the concrete stockpiled for recycling. The 40,000 tons of material was processed on-site using a Retek 1313i impact crusher which processed approximately 230 tons of concrete per hour. Recycled concrete was then placed as base course (sub base) for the new runways. The recycled concrete aggregate utilized as sub base on this project met all federal aviation specifications.
